Document Naming Guidance

Please name all documents uploaded through this form clearly and consistently in order for our reps/legal teams to complete the review as efficiently as possible.

Where possible, please keep documents separate and named in the following way:

  • [Date_Type of Document_Your Name]
  • e.g. 28082025_Termination Letter_Jon Doe

This helps us quickly identify and review the key materials in your case.

Minimum Documentation Required

In order for a review to be commenced, we require at least the following:

Confirmation of date of employment (ideally documentary evidence from your employer confirming reason for starting a process against you  e.g. a redundancy process);

Where possible, a copy of your employment contract (unless your case involves a complaint that no contract was ever received);

Any documentation available in the lead-up to the process that has started which may establish whether there is a link between the process and relevant guidance, e.g. letters confirming basis for the process, minutes of meetings, and emails with your employer.

Your cooperation in submitting these documents promptly and in the required format will allow us to assist you as effectively and quickly as possible.

Writing to Your MP – Advice for MAPs

As UMAPs prepares for our judicial review against the government and NHS England (likely to be heard in the autumn), it is vital that we brief as many MPs as possible on the situation facing Medical Associates and why the recommendations of the Leng Review are so detrimental.

This will put pressure on the government to reconsider its approach and, hopefully, work with UMAPs to create a sustainable path forward that addresses conditions for MAPs in the workplace and improves employment prospects.

As your trade union, UMAPs holds regular meetings with members of both the House of Commons and House of Lords to update them on the situation and discuss ways in which parliamentarians can support us. However, there are 650 members of parliament, and we can’t reach them all. That’s why we’re asking for your help.

All MPs have a duty to help their constituents. Many hold regular drop-in sessions (called surgeries) to meet with voters and hear their concerns. By meeting with your MP you can bring issues like the Leng Review, MAP redundancies, and royal college guidance to their attention. You can then encourage them to engage with UMAPs and support our cause.

For those living in Wales, Scotland, or Northern Ireland, it’s equally as important that you write to your MS, MSP, or MLA, as well as your elected MP in Westminster, as health related issues are also matters for the devolved governments to discuss and address.

Writing to Your MP

You can find your MP’s email address on their website or by checking ‘Contact Your MP’ on the parliamentary website. You can also use this page to find out who your local MP is if you’re not sure.

When writing to them, it’s important to always include the address you are registered to vote at, so they know that you live in their constituency. MPs cannot take up requests on behalf of people live in another constituency.

When you write to your MP, you can ask to meet at their constituency offices or for a telephone conversation. This will ensure you get the best possible opportunity to explain your concerns and they can ask any follow-up questions. You should also check on their website if they are hosting a constituency surgery and if you need to pre-book attendance.

Try to make your email as brief and personal as possible. If you send a formulaic email, you can expect a formulaic response in return. In the first instance you will likely hear back from a caseworker or assistant. Be polite and answer any questions they have but try to insist on a meeting with the MP themselves.

Format

Although you should strive to make your email as personal as possible. You can follow the below structure as a guide.

  • Introduce yourself: where you live, how long you’ve lived in the constituency, what your job is and where you work.
  • Request a meeting to discuss the problems you are facing.
  • Explain the problem you are facing: redundancy, restricted scope of practice, uncertainty about the future.
  • Explain the situation for MAPs generally: the bullying by BMA aligned doctors, redundancies following RCGP guidance and the Leng Review, lack of opportunities.
  • Explain the effect this has had on you: personally, professionally, financially, and how it has impacted on your wellbeing. Only include information you are happy to share, but please remember that honest statements tend to be more impactful.

Re: Request for Meeting – Support for Physician Associates

Dear MP,

I hope this finds you well. My name is Joe Bloggs. I’m a Physician Associate living at 14 Any Street in Sometown. Until recently I worked at the Sunnyside Surgery but after the government accepted the recommendations of the Leng Review in July last year, I’ve been made redundant despite an excellent clinical record.

I’m writing to request a meeting to discuss what support you can offer for my situation, as well as to other Physician Associates in our constituency who now face a very uncertain future.

I’ve worked as a PA for ten years. Before the Leng Review I loved my job: I had great relationships with patients and always got excellent feedback from the practice partners. However, because of the government’s decision to massively restrict PAs’ scope of work, the practice have elected to let me go. I’m currently contesting this decision as part of an employment tribunal brought forward by my trade union, UMAPs.

I have two young children at home and am very worried about what the future will bring for them. Very few practices are hiring PAs now and I cannot afford to retrain. This situation has been very damaging to my mental health, and I am struggling psychologically with the loss of my career, and the long-term implications on my family and finances.

The Leng Review found no evidence that PAs are unsafe or ineffective, yet it has completely undermined our work, preventing us from treating undifferentiated (undiagnosed) patients and has renamed us ‘Assistants’ which feels incredibly demeaning. The government implemented this review without any assessment of how it would affect Associates or indeed patients. There are now 900 fewer PAs working in primary care than in April 2024 and two in five PAs report worsening wait times in their practices.

UMAPs is taking the government and NHS England to judicial review over this decision, with a hearing expected in the autumn. In the meantime, I’d very much welcome the opportunity to explain more about my situation and discuss ways in which you can support the Medical Associates who live in our constituency.

Thanks very much and I look forward to hearing from you.

Best wishes,
Joe

Associates Access To Personal Medical Care

For Associates who are currently feeling uncomfortable scheduling an appointment with their own GP, we have partnered with a trusted provider:

If you would like to avail yourself of this option, then please visit www.ivrystreet.co.uk and submit a new e-consult request using the Accurx link.

Please make clear in your request that you are a PA or AA. The practice’s admin team will then call you back and complete a temporary registration.

The practice will need your consent to information sharing with your usual GP, especially if referral to secondary care services are required. The service is suitable only for problems that can be dealt with via remote consultations and is not for severe illness or acute mental health crises. In the latter case please call 111 option 2 instead.

Introduction

UMAPs is currently engaged in critical legal action to protect the future of Medical Associate Professionals across the UK. These cases are essential to safeguarding jobs, defending professional recognition, and ensuring the long-term viability of the PA and AA roles.

As a member-led organisation, our ability to pursue and sustain these legal challenges depends entirely on collective support. Unlike long-established institutions, we do not have historic reserves or external funding to draw upon. Our strength lies in our membership. In YOU.

To ensure we can continue this work, we have introduced the UMAPs Legal Support Levy: A voluntary monthly levy (suggested £17) to sustain ongoing legal action.

We recognise the financial pressures many members are facing. For this reason, the levy is flexible. You may opt out, reduce, or increase your contribution according to your circumstances.

This is a collective effort. If we are able to meet our funding targets, we can continue to pursue these legal challenges with confidence. If we cannot, the risks to our cases, and to the profession as a whole, are significant.

We are committed to being transparent, honest, and member-led in everything we do. We ask you to consider contributing, if you are able, to support this shared goal.

FAQ

What is the UMAPs levy?

The levy is an additional, voluntary contribution from members to fund legal costs associated with ongoing cases that are critical to protecting MAP roles and employment.

Why is this levy necessary?

UMAPs is currently funding significant legal action. The levy helps bridge the gap between our monthly turnover and the legal fees for both the Judicial Review and our Employment Cases.

Is the levy mandatory?

No. The levy is voluntary. Members can:

  • Opt out entirely
  • Contribute less than the suggested amount
  • Contribute more if they wish

How do I opt out or change my contribution?

You can opt out or adjust your contribution using the form on this page.

  • Opt-out window: 22nd of the month to the 21st of the next month for each monthly cycle
  • Changes apply to the next levy payment

Do I need to opt out every month?

Yes. This allows you to make a decision each month based on your personal financial situation and adjust your contribution accordingly. Opting out one month DOES NOT automatically opt you out of future months.

What happens if I miss the opt-out deadline?

If you miss the deadline and there are not exceptional circumstances explaining it, you will not be refunded. However, due to the administrative burden on our volunteer team seeking proof of financial hardship, you should only use this feature in the express circumstance that you are experiencing hardship.

Please note that any Stripe processing fees incurred when collecting and refunding the levy are non-refundable and will be retained to cover transaction costs around late or disputed payments.

Why can’t UMAPs cover these costs without a levy?

UMAPs is a newly established organisation and does not have historic financial reserves. Our legal cases must be funded in real time through membership support. To date we have spent over £650,000 on pursuing compensation for trade union members – including the prospect of compensation for member from the article 11 breach alleged in the judicial review against the Government, NHSE and Professor Leng.

What will the money be used for?

All levy funds will go directly towards legal costs, including barrister fees and associated expenses required to pursue and defend our cases.

Can you share more details about the legal cases?

Due to legal privilege, we are limited in what we can disclose publicly. However, we can confirm that:

  • The cases are based on strong legal arguments
  • We are confident in our position
  • These actions are essential to protecting the profession
  • We will update you as able throughout the claims

What happens if the funding target is not met?

If we are unable to meet required funding levels, our ability to continue legal proceedings will be significantly more difficult whilst also maintaining daily trade union activities and indemnity cases. This could have serious consequences for MAP roles, employment, and the future of the profession.

Why is this being framed as a collective effort?

Because it is. It would not be fair or sustainable for a small number of members to carry the financial burden. A minor monthly contribution from many creates a fairer and more effective approach as well as helps us seek compensation for the article 11 human rights breaches that we have alleged in the judicial review that we believe were inflicted on our membership.

What if I am struggling financially?

We fully understand that many members are facing financial pressures. The levy is designed to be flexible. You can opt out or contribute an amount that is manageable for you.

Calling SC/PC PAs and AAs: Become a UMAPs Rep

Dear Associate,

UMAPs is recruiting new union representatives, and we’re particularly looking for members working in Primary Care, Secondary Care and Anaesthesia Associates roles to help strengthen representation across our workplace.

A union exists to support and represent staff at work. We work collectively to improve pay, conditions, workload, wellbeing, job security, and fairness in the workplace. Union representatives are a key part of that work, helping raise concerns, supporting colleagues, and ensuring staff voices are heard in discussions with management.

You do not need previous union experience to become a rep. Training, guidance, and support will all be provided.

Becoming a union rep is an opportunity to:

Support colleagues in your area
Help improve workplace conditions
Raise issues affecting staff
Build confidence and skills in communication and representation
Strengthen collective staff voice and solidarity

We are especially keen to hear from SC/PC PAs/ AAs so that our representation better reflects the staff groups we represent.

If you’d like to find out more or express an interest, please contact info@umaps.org.uk. An informal conversation is absolutely welcome if you’re curious but unsure.

Under the expert guidance of our legal team, and the dedicated, strategic leadership of our own executive committee, things are moving very quickly behind the scenes here at UMAPs. We’re excited to share our future updates and victories with you – so watch this space, because we are just getting started!
