United Medical Associate Professionals Trade Union (UMAPs) are delighted to announce that today, 29th April 2025, we received our official Certificate of Independence as a Trade Union.
The certificate grants us the status of an independent trade union ‘within the meaning of Section 5 of the Trade Union and Labour Relations (Consolidation) Act 1992’. An independent trade union is considered an autonomous body, allowing them to advocate for their members’ rights without influence from any employer, employers’ associations, or the government. It gives us equal standing with other trade unions, including the British Medical Association.
This is a historic and momentous moment for UMAPs, and we would like to take this opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to our staff, volunteers, and membership for their unwavering support and dedication.
Over the last year, UMAPs has worked tirelessly to defend and support our members, and we are delighted to see the impact and influence we have exerted not just with MAP employers, but within political and professional spheres.
We have long worked at the level of an independent trade union, and there was never any doubt that we would eventually apply for, and be granted, independent trade union status. The incredible speed with which our application has been processed and approved should leave you all in no doubt as to the legitimacy and professionalism of our organisation.
We hope that this announcement silences those who have spread malicious falsehoods about UMAPs, and that it assures our profession that this vindictive campaign was simply targeted, anti-MAP propaganda.
UMAPs has proven beyond a doubt that we are a capable and competent trade union, and we have gone head-to-head with long established medical organisations in pursuit of justice for our members.
So, whilst we take a moment to celebrate this milestone together, we also remain focused on our task of holding accountable those who seek to bully and victimise our professions. We will protect those who, as individuals, would not be able to represent or protect themselves, and we stand firm in our unrelenting defence of our members.
As our membership continues to grow, we look forward to welcoming more of our PA and AA workforce home to UMAPs. With your support, we can continue to protect and represent our profession, ensuring that no PA or AA is subjected to the deplorable treatment we have seen inflicted on our colleagues over the last two years.
UMAPs has achieved so much already, but we promise you – our members and prospective members – that we are just getting started!
